The word “bespoke” carries many ancient and lofty connotations but what it really means is that your clothing is cut from a pattern created specifically for you. In this way it differs from “off the rack” (or “ready to wear”) clothing as well as “made to measure” clothing; which is created to order by scaling an existing pattern up or down as necessary to get the closest approximate custom fit for the client. While “bespoke” is a term typically associated with Savile Row the fact is it simply means true custom made men’s clothing and in that sense it is the male version of haute couture. But although bespoke clothing may be created by tailors not associated with the rarified air of the capital there are actually precious few who are experienced enough to create something truly unique and timeless.
